The Grocery Store – A Treasure Trove of Healthy Foods

June 14th, 2010  |  Published in Uncategorized

The grocery store. It’s your easiest access to food – not necessarily just the nutritious ones. If you’re following a strict diet, the grocery store can be a haven for temptations as healthy diet sabotages are lurking around the corner.

Leading a healthy lifestyle does not only mean learning to eat healthy – it also means learning to shop healthy as well. And that includes avoiding all possible temptations.

As a healthy shopper, it is very important to develop skills such as label reading. You should learn to read what is placed on nutritional labels in order to understand the percentage of the nutrition, minerals and vitamins that you are taking in.

Aside from that, nutritional labels also provide consumers with information as to calorie content, percentage and fat content as well as fiber content as well. As you roam around the grocery store, you can read among the labels in order to compare and choose the right foods for you.

Here are some other important tips that you can follow in order to make your grocery store trip an experience that’s healthy, easy and enjoyable as well. After all, you can’t really have a healthy pantry or refrigerator or a healthy dinner at that if you don’t stock your refrigerator with healthy foods. So let’s start with the tips.

Do your shopping on a full stomach. This is the number one rule when it comes to grocery shopping and is something that you should follow strictly. If this means that you should stop for a snack on the way to the grocery store – then do so. It is of complete importance to refrain entering the supermarket when you are hungry. Hungry shoppers are apt to make bad choices and are more tempted to buy unhealthy choices when they shop.

One good tip is to immediately hit the produce section of the grocery store. Then, fill up your cart or basket with nutritious and healthy vegetables as well. This way, you can stock your refrigerator with choices that are healthier. And you will have less room for unhealthy foods.

Aside from that, it is also important to create a detailed list of what to shop before doing the shopping. A detailed and well thought out grocery plan keeps you from spending more than you should, and keeps you from temptation as well. Take a look at your pantry and find out what you need to add. In fact, you can keep a notepad in your kitchen so you can easily jot down what you need when it runs out.

When you shop around, make it a point to really look at the products. You may not know it, but there are indeed plenty of low fat foods that can be used as alternative to those that you presently use. There are plenty of variety of the foods that you eat, from low fat milk, low fat dairy products, drinks, cakes and pies as well. These products contain the same delicious taste of products with 100% fat – but of course, without the fat as well.

When you shop for low fat products, however, do try to remember that you should also look out for sugar content as well. Sugar is not necessarily the enemy, but too much sugar is.

As long as you are careful with the sugar content, you can still eat sweets and low fat desserts as well. When you shop, do try to choose single portion sizes so you won’t be tempted to eat more than you should. This method still allows you to eat sweets but limits the disadvantages of eating so, which are high fats and calories.

Of course, one other smart strategy when it comes to choosing the right foods is to choose whole grain always. Make sure that you choose whole grain cereals or whole grain breads if possible, since whole grain has more fiber and more nutrients than its processed counterpart.

When you shop for cereals that are healthiest, try to understand the consumer psychology that food manufacturers and grocery stores follow. Those at high demand, especially sugar laden cereals which are less healthy, are usually placed on kid levels, and those that are healthier products – usually targeted for adults – are usually placed on the top shelves.

Choose those from the tops. Of course, not all grocery stores follow this rule, so don’t just choose from the top blindly. As always, make sure that you learn to read labels as well.

May 16th, 2010  |  Published in Uncategorized

You should eat food that gives you the nutrition your body needs to stay healthy. It should not contain harmful substances that affect the body negatively. Moreover, it is important that you enjoy your food and think it is good and satisfactory. If you feel dissatisfied after a meal is a high risk that you are trying to compensate for this with sweets or other stimulants.

What food is healthy?

Here, opinions differ, and various experts are saying different things. Different people need different types of food.

Eat variety of fruits, vegetables, roots, potatoes, salad, fish, peas, beans, lentils, soya products, rice, grains, oil in small quantities, lean dairy products.

Avoid junk food and food that contains sugar or too much saturated fat, soda, alcohol, most sausage varieties, chips, sweets, pastries and white bread.

You should avoid junk food because it deceives the body. It contains far too much sugar and fat but too little of important nutrients.

Glycemic index is a measure of how quickly a food affects blood sugar. Foods with low glycemic index are generally healthier than foods with high glycemic index.

Food can create a addiction similar to the alcohol and drugs. People with such addiction problems may need to abstain from eating such food that just leads them to eating disorders.

How to Eat Healthy at Fast Food Restaurants While in Fitness Contest Preparation

March 7th, 2010  |  Published in Uncategorized

American fast food restaurants have captured the hearts of many Americans today. They provide the ease of preparing your favorite orders such as hamburgers, salads, milk shakes, french fries, Apple pies and even famous breakfast means such as pancakes and sausage. Not only is fast food a luxury leisure, but it has it’s side effects. Over time, consumption of fast food can cause heartburn, excessive weight gain , especially in the abdominal section, and promote gluttony. French fries are cooked down in heavy oil which is loaded with unhealthy cholesterol, which may become a threat to your heart if consumed regularly.

How can people resist the great fast food titans without feeling too strict on themselves? Wendys, Taco Bell, McDonalds, Burger King, Applebees, Kentucky Fried Chicken “KFC” and Roy Rogers serves delicious food to all who desire to consume. At times, the food tastes exceptionally good in which one has to wonder at times if they put special drugs in the fast food orders to keep people’s taste buds addicted to them. A good thing to know for bodybuilders, fitness model and regular gym buffs is that you can eat fast food and still keep that lean physique. How so? It’s all about what someone chooses to eat from the fast food menu that helps one keep muscle on or pile body fat slowly over the hard earned muscle. Examples of healthy food that is recommended to consume from any fast food restaurants are garden salads, low fat milkshakes of any flavor, grilled chicken sandwiches, low fat mayonaise on food, bbq chicken sandwiches and grilled chicken burritos. It’s ok to add some sauce to food, as we have to keep some kind of dry taste off of what we eat. Remember to moderate adding too much sauce to anything from fast food restaurants, because most likely, it contains lots of sodium. As we all know, sodium intake should be highly moderated, because that determines how much water weight you hold and how much definition your muscular cuts show at time of the bodybuilding fitness contest.

Last but not least, don’t go overboard spending too much money on food for your bodybuilding contest. If fast food is a must have everyday, see that you spend no more than ten dollars. Besides, look at it as just a snack and not apart of your regular daily eating regimen. Focus more on lean meats, fish, raw fruit and vegetable juicing and incorporate your vitamin, protein and additional supplement intake regularly. There is nothing wrong giving into fast food temptation every now and then. We are all human and it does make sense to binge eat

It’s Never Too Late to Get Back into Health and Fitness

January 6th, 2010  |  Published in Health & Fitness

Hello people,
At this time of the year many of you go on holiday, or have the children at home, and adding to this the warm evenings, barbeques, and enticing beer gardens, many people find that they are slipping out of their good habits, and starting to feel sluggish. It is an often repeated scenario that effects many of you, including myself, that just when you seem to be getting somewhere, improving fitness levels, and loosing unwanted weight, life takes over, holidays loom, work tires you out, babies are, food and fitness, born, and suddenly it seems as if you are back to square one.

Many people feel that when they have taken time out from their exercise routine, or when social engagements and holidays have sabotaged their healthy eating habits, that they have to start from scratch again. This can seem daunting and unfair, and often is enough to put you off altogether. We feel that all the hard work is useless if you can loose it all so easily, and that it is easier not to bother, and that we have failed. This may lead us back to bad habits and spiraling low-self esteem, where it becomes harder and harder to get back into fitness, food and fitness, and health.

It is never too late to get back into health and fitness.
I think that we should take a leaf out of the government’s book and replace the word FAILURE with DEFFERRED SUCCESS. Slipping out of your health and fitness routines is merely a normal part of the journey towards changing your lifestyle for the better for ever (no that is not an excuse, food and fitness, for deliberately slipping out and buying that chocolate gateau). We, food and fitness, should view these little excursions from out healthy routine as minor blips.

Do not allow them to continue, don’t think about having to start again, just think about continuing with your good work. Try to see the bad times as an exception to the rule, and the good times as normal life, rather that the other way round.
Last week I was talking to my dad and he explained, food and fitness, that they have had lots of visitors staying and provided them with lots of lovely (and naughty) food, and that next week they were having a dinner party and so he would be dropping out of his healthy routine yet again.

He told me that he would start again after the dinner party,, food and fitness, but I reminded him that he could continue to eat well until the dinner party, and then just take a day off. I think that this illustrates the way that many of us think about our healthy lifestyles, often it seems something that we can put off until later, but sometimes later, food and fitness, becomes a lot later and sometimes it never happens. I am afraid that we have to be a little strict with ourselves,, food and fitness, pick ourselves off the sofa, turn off that TV and get out there, book a badminton court, turn up to a class or go for a walk.

Summer is such a great time to take a look at your exercise, food and fitness, routine and what you eat and make some more effort. If you go on holiday do not see it as a time to do all of the things you would never dream of doing at home,, food and fitness, look at it as an opportunity to try some new pursuits such as fitness walking, sea swimming, pony trekking, skiing etc Take in the scenery whilst being active, visit markets to sample local fruit and vegetables, and if you are close to the sea, go to seafood restaurants and eat loads of fresh fish.

If you, food and fitness, are, food and fitness, at home with kids, try some active pursuits with them, get down the farmers market and get them, food and fitness, to choose some interesting seasonal fruits and vegetables, food and fitness, . Go out into the garden and, food and fitness, do some gardening, use the better weather to stay active, and then when the Autumn comes and most people are feeling remorse for the damage that they have done to themselves over the Summer, you will know that you calmly carried on living well, food and fitness, and healthily.

If you find that you are struggling to fit everything in, then write down the way you feel when you are eating well and exercising regularly; more energy, sleeping better, feeling confident, feeling less stressed, having a more positive body image, feeling, food and fitness, physically strong, feeling proud of yourself. Remind yourself of these things, and then continue with this healthy happy path. Forget the period of relapse, don’t feel bad about it, don’t let it put you off making the effort to get back into health, just calmly take the steps needed to get you back on track.

Clear the rubbish out the fridge, telephone a squash partner, pick up a timetable from the gym, put a note in your diary and make an appointment with, food and fitness, yourself to get fitter and feel better.
Health and fitness is about progression not perfection, don’t look back at where you went wrong, look forward and think about the things that you can do today to progress.
Nag over, cheerio until next time,, food and fitness, and have a healthy happy week.
