Moon Puerto Rico (Moon Handbooks) Review

This book doesn’t have quite as much detail as the Rough Guide or Fodors, but for the average traveler, it’s pretty darn good. It may not give you all the history or other details of a place but it will tell you enough highlights so that you can make up your mind about what you want to see and it will give you a few suggestions for the best (and best deals) on restaurants and hotels in each place as well. If you’re someone who wants to know all the details, go for Rough Guide or Fodors. But if your the average traveler, and especially if you plan to spend most of your days in San Juan or at some other beach and you just want enough info to take a few day trips, the Moon book will be likely become your favorite.

African Safari Journal Review

The African Safari Journal by Mark W. Nolting is a book meant to be brought on a safari trip to Africa. This book has tons of information you will want with on on your African safari –

-Place for your Address, Emergency Contacts, Passport Information, Hotel Information, Itinerary Information, Health Information, Flight Schedules
-Packing and Shopping Lists
-Stargazing Tips, Photography Tips, Birdwatching Tips, Safari Tips, Reserve Maps
-Safari Glossary
-Animal Footprints Guide
-50 pages for your own safari journal for day to day notes
-Identification Guides and Checklists for Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Frogs, Insects and Trees
-Map and Country Directories for: Botswana, Burundi, Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe
-Language Dictionaries for: French, Shona, Swahili, Tsana, Zulu
-Recommended Reading

This book has just about everything you need for your African safari. Be sure to fill out as many of the information pages before you leave for your trip. Reading through this journal, I was trying to think of something that was missing from this book. I couldn’t think of anything I would like to see added to this book. The author has thought of practically everything.

The mammal, bird, reptile, tree, and insect guides have illustrated color pictures and quick descriptions of each species. There are places to check off or list exactly what you saw on your safari plus a more comprehensive checklist near the back of the safari journal. The descriptions are a bit short for my liking, however if they were longer the book may be too big or heavy to take along on a safari.

I really liked the trivia tidbits at the bottom of the personal journal pages such as “Did you know? Lions sleep or doze for up to twenty hours a day.”

If you are planning an African safari, I highly recommend getting a copy of African Safari Journal by Mark W. Nolting

African Safari Journal Overview

Going on safari requires preparation – and no book leaves a traveler better prepared than this one. Including a wildlife guide and checklist, trip organizer, phrase book, safari diary, and map, this tremendous resource puts all necessary information right at the traveler’s fingertips.

Hidden Southwest: Including Arizona, New Mexico, Southern Utah, and Southwest Colorado (Hidden Travel) Review

I purchased this book in order to plan a 6 week trip to New Mexico and Arizona. If you want a book that will clearly and intelligently tell you about everything in these two states, this is a good option. Unfortunately, this book isn’t very helpful in prioritizing sites. For example, I’m sure every single indian pueblo is listed, but it’s difficult to tell which ones are worth allocating time to. Don’t get me wrong, this is an excellent book, but, if this is your first visit to the area, you will need a more opinionated book to help you sift though the many, many sightseeing options.

Hidden Southwest: Including Arizona, New Mexico, Southern Utah, and Southwest Colorado (Hidden Travel) Overview

Offers insider advice on seeing the best of the Grand Canyon, shopping for authentic American Indian crafts and exploring Old West ghost towns while avoiding the tourist traps along the way

Reviews distinctive lodging options including grand golf resorts around Phoenix, spa retreats in Sedona and dude ranches out on the open range

The perfect backroads adventure guide with recommended trips down lost highways to distinctive but little-visited locales

Moon Wisconsin (Moon Handbooks)

Moon Wisconsin (Moon Handbooks) Review

I wasn’t born in Wisconsin, but I moved there with my family before most of my memories begin, and stayed there until I went off to school – in Chicago, so I could return often. I didn’t ever feel the need to get a travel guide until I took a trip with my mother around the state a little over 10 years ago, visiting among other places the Dickeyville Grotto: The Vision of Father Mathias Wernerus (Folk Art and Artists Series). This book was our primary guide, and it caused me to fall in love with the Moon guides and the way they do things. Like their other books, this is short on gloss and pretension – no color pictures, no fancy maps (there are some fairly simple ones, but that’s what atlases are for, really), and no attempt made to tell you where every single fast food restaurant and chain motel is in a city like Milwaukee or Madison.

What you get instead is the point of view of a single insider who knows the state inside and out. Thomas Huhti mentions the Dickeyville Grotto all right – and other interesting small attractions nearby; and also the Concrete Park in Philips, and the Forevertron; he gives you the scoop on supperclubs and fish boils and “Cheeseheads”. There’s a lot of attention paid to the land, to the history, to the natural treasures of a still relatively rural state, and you come away with a real sense of what makes the state special – as you do with most of the Moon books I’ve looked at. Here I can say confidently as a fellow longtime resident that Huhti leaves few stones unturned, few points of interest unexplored, and he gives you enough to whet your appetite without wasting vast amounts of space on things you don’t really need him to. Sure, there’s a fair bit of space devoted to the House on the Rock and the Dells – but it doesn’t ever feel like a big advertisement.

If you’re just heading in-and-out of the state in a few days, this might not be your best choice; but if you want to develop a love affair with the Cheese State, or already have, by all means dive right in.

Moon Wisconsin (Moon Handbooks) Overview

Born-and-bred “Cheesehead” Thomas Huhti offers an insider’s view of Wisconsin, from the bars and pubs of Madison to the beaches and water parks of the Wisconsin Dells. Thomas is a perfect tour guide, providing unique trip ideas such as a Wisconsin Outdoors Adventure and a Frank Lloyd Wright Tour. Packed with information on dining, transportation, and accommodations, Moon Wisconsin has lots of options for a range of travel budgets. Every Moon guidebook includes recommendations for must-see sights and many regional, area and city-centered maps. With advice on dining in Milwaukee and exploring the scenic lakeside towns of Door County, Moon Wisconsin gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience. With expert writers, first-rate strategic advice, and an essential dose of humor, Moon Handbooks are the cure for the common trip.

Idaho Off the Beaten Path, 7th (Off the Beaten Path Series) Review

This is Julie writing a week after the publication of the 7th edition of Idaho Off the Beaten Path, which is by far the most frequently updated guidebook to Idaho (updated every other year). The new edition features expanded coverage of Boise and its fast-growing suburbs, plus new and offbeat finds throughout Idaho. It’s true that many of the places noted in the book will be familiar to Idaho locals, but most people will be happy to see a few new finds in every corner of the state, particularly close-to-home spots to save gas and money. I hope you will have fun discovering Idaho with my book.

Travel with Kids: The Definitive Guide to Family Holidays Worldwide

Travel with Kids: The Definitive Guide to Family Holidays Worldwide Review

This book has extensive information for travel with kids in almost every corner of every continent. Full of pictures, it is written in a bright, accessible style. Disappointingly, emphasis is on places they are likely to have heard of (Orlando, Italy, Australia), rather than places their parents might simply wish to take them, and on beaches and adenaline-charged activities rather than on museums and quiet activities. There is really nothing wrong with this focus, except that, to a large extent, it explains the obvious. This book also has a presumption of dysfunction about the dynamics of traveling families, and is particularly ugly in its references to teenagers. Perhaps the author is just being funny, but my wife and I read several of the descriptions and just sort of looked at each other disgustedly (i.e., we didn’t laugh). The author apparently feels that the depth of a teenager’s travel-savvy extends no farther than recreational shopping or finding an adrenaline-rush. Quote from the section on France: “Fashion-conscious teenage girls will enjoy browsing the shops [of Paris], and might even tolerate mum and dad tagging along– as long as they bring their credit cards.” Also, on Berlin and Amsterdam: “Of course, you probably won’t get teenagers within a hundred miles of either Amsterdam or Berlin unless you tempt them with… the promise of retail heaven.” On Asia: “If your teenagers are more into retail therapy than adrenaline abuse, take them to Dubai…” etc., etc., etc. The pitch of this one-note song only makes me wish for a different book geared toward families with tots/children/teens who DON’T view a family trip as an occasion to incubate brattiness. The author clearly expects much less from his readers’ children than he does from his own, who are “fantastic little travelers, always happy to confront new challenges.”

On a side note, it is curious how many places are simply excluded from the book, presumably because they are not as interesting to children. But isn’t the purpose of the book to help parents travel with children to places where child-focused activities are more elusive? For example, there is nothing about the American Midwest — never mind Chicago with its Sears Tower and world-famous aquarium and science museum. While several countries (such as France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey) get detailed chapters to themselves, many countries, such as Japan and Russia, are altogether excluded.

Moon Belize (Moon Handbooks) Review

Josh Berman, who calls himself a “Jewish Hillbilly,” has delivered a truly useful travel guide in his MOON HANDBOOKS: BELIZE. His sense of humor is unobtrusively on display on nearly every page. (For laugh-out-loud funny, check his translations from Kriol. Yes, that’s how it’s spelled. Look in the index.) His relaxed style make this book a joy to read.

The book itself, as my title indicates, doesn’t weigh much. You can fit it in your backpack or purse without dislocating your shoulder. Other guidebooks try to cover everything in depth and, as a result, gives the reader no clear idea of why he or she ought to visit the country in the first place.

Josh covers Belize district by district. In addition to providing general information about each district’s major towns, he also includes sidebars that provide a reader with quick, accurate, and often very funny verbal snapshots. Under the heading Belize District, for example, he discusses the town of Crooked Tree, its wildlife sanctuary and nearby Maya ruins. He ends his account with info about how to get to Crooked Tree, and where to stay and eat once you’ve arrived. And on p. 62, there’s a fascinating sidebar about Crooked Tree’s annual Cashew Festival. Who knew!

As someone who once lived in Belize and has gone back several times to visit, I put Josh’s book to good use on my last trip when I ventured inland to Belmopan and braved the expats on Ambergris Caye. I found it to be a helpful and funny travel companion. If you’re Belize-bound, buy this book!

Postcards and Trains: Travel USA by Train Review

Postcards and Trains: Travel USA by Train Overview

Postcards stand for travel destinations and sites, while Trains refers to the experience of traveling via train. Postcards and Trains- Travel USA by Train is a complete travel guide and travel reference, with comprehensive destinations, accommodations, and transportation information. This book focuses mainly on destinations a traveler will experience while following the path of US train travel routes. Unlike other train travel books, which mostly focus on the train itself, the focal points of this book are the destinations and the unique opportunities of train travel.

Postcards and Trains details more than 500 destinations (cities, towns, national parks and natural wonders) and covers all 48 states and the District of Columbia. In addition, the book includes 4 main parts: Facts about the US, Facts about US Train Travel, Tips for Travelers, and the Train Travel Destinations. The latter part includes destination backgrounds, local transportation, places to see, what to expect, list of accommodations, etc. In addition there are illustrations, US and State Maps, US Train Route Maps, a rich photo collection of destination highlights, and a list of useful websites and telephone numbers. In the “Useful Information and Tips” section, among many other tips, there is information on Railroad Parks and Museum in the US and list of US train sales representative worldwide.
